In Praise of Shadow
In Praise of Shadow

1933 essay on Japanese aesthetics by the Japanese author Jun'ichiro Tanizaki. Comparing Western and Japanese aesthetic sensibilities toward shadows, he discusses the traditional beauty symbolized by the dim light in Japan, noting that Western culture brightens every corner of a room to eliminate shadows, whereas Japanese culture recognizes and values shadows.
"Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty."
Artist's Insights
During the difficult, dark, and gloomy days I was experiencing, I encountered this Japanese cultural concept of In Praise Of Shadow.
This cultural paradigm, which values the beauty of shadows, held a profound meaning for me.
Instead of being overwhelmed by negative emotions during such challenging times, it made me realize that beauty and warmth can exist precisely because of those difficult circumstances.
This culture, which underscores the balance between light and shadow, made me recognize the kindness in the supportive words and people who encouraged and cared about me.
It gave me the strength to find hope even in the darkness.
Profoundly fascinated by this culture, I sought to express the beauty and warmth of shadows in my own way, which led me to create the following art piece.
